Fidelio presents the catalogue of the exhibition that Gimpel Fils, Irvin’s long time gallery, opened on the eve of his ninetieth birthday, accompanied by a foreword from Paul Moorehouse.
The title represents multiple notions, from his fidelity to consistent abstraction—in which, over the decades, the artist has been careful to eschew figuration in any form—to a musical evocation, echoing Albert Irvin’s love for and great knowledge of the classics. It even extends to the mutual act of professional commitment that Irvin and his wife Betty displayed over the decades as an inseparable couple.
Albert Irvin RA was born in 1922 in London, where he lived and worked until his death in March 2015.
